Schwenke, president of Thomas Schwenke Inc., recognized as the nation's foremost specialist in the original furniture of the Federal Period.  The site for the exhibition was generously made available by Georgetown University, through the cooperation of the Georgetown University Alumni Association.

Inspired by the celebration of the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution, the exhibition includes over one hundred pieces of furniture made from 1788 to 1820- the American Federal period. The purpose of the exhibition was to present a large representative sampling of the furniture forms made during the early Federal period, and thereby to illustrate the development of a distinctively American style of furniture-American Federal furniture. This landmark exhibition was officially recognized by the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution as a project of national significance with substantial historical and educational value.
